It all started with a plastic table…
It was nearing the end of 2014 when Liz Kite donated food to a woman who set up that plastic table outside the Tauranga City Library. They served three people that evening. Although the woman eventually stopped coming, Liz continued week after week. Soon other volunteers arrived with donations of food, clothing, bedding, toiletries. One night, as a guest was leaving, Liz asked him “Where are you sleeping tonight?"
“Under the stars” was his reply.
Under the Stars was born.
For the next two years Under the Stars worked outside, week after week, month after month, in all weather, providing food, korero, clothing, and other necessities to our people. Donations were received from businesses, community groups, schools, and more.

In June 2016, Under the Stars officially transitioned into a Charitable Trust, and in the following month, we took the important step of renting the hall located at 45 Cliff Rd. This move marked a significant milestone for our organisation.
In 2019, Liz, the founder of Under the Stars, made the heartfelt decision to leave the organisation as her own personal circumstances changed. Although this decision was undoubtedly difficult and emotional for her, she departed knowing she had successfully established the organisation in such a way that it would continue to make a meaningful and positive difference to those individuals for whom she had been advocating for many years. As she stated, “we were whanau and will continue to be.” Liz Kite, October, 2019

For four years, Laura Wood was a powerhouse behind Under the Stars, managing a wide array of important aspects related to the daily operations while also keeping a careful eye on the bigger-picture. Many within the community will certainly be familiar with the cheerful and vibrant American, who devoted herself wholeheartedly to this vital cause. In 2023, Laura made the decision to move out of Tauranga in order to be closer to her family and her young mokopuna, as she wanted to play an active role in their lives and enjoy cherished moments together.
